#137 - STORM

Today's black history cosplay comes from Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Born Ororo Munroe to a Kenyan tribal princess mom and African-American photojournalist she was raised in the Harlem area of NYC and then Cairo, Egypt. She was eventually orphaned when her parents were killed during the Arab-Israeli conflict. Most know her as the weather manipulating, descendant of African witch priestesses, X-Men member Storm and newly appointed Regent of Arakko.

Ororo Munroe a/k/a Storm

Although she was not the first black female superhero in the comic books, she is the first to star in a mainstream comic book distribution.* She debuted in 1975 as part of Professor Xavier's mutants X-Men and is still popular today. In recent years we have seen her in theatrical releases being played by Oscar-award-winning actress Halle Berry who plays her as an adult and relative newcomer Alexandra Shipp who plays her from teen to young adulthood.

King & Queen of Wakanda - T'Challa & Storm

Representation matters! In the world of comic books black superheroes are a distinct minority. Storm has seen success being linked not only to the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises, but also with the Avengers in her marriage to the T'Challa, King of Wakanda - the Black Panther. Together they fought to protect the borders of Wakanda and the world.

Will MCU fans get to see Storm take her rightful place as Queen of Wakanda?

This week marked the fourth anniversary of the MCU's world premiere of the stand alone Black Panther movie. Fans around the world have since speculated and in many ways demanded that Marvel add the marriage of T'Challa and Storm to the Black Panther brand. The question that still lingers however is which actress would they cast to play this role. Also, with the recent death of lead actor Chadwick Boseman, fans now wonder will this union ever happen. Many would prefer that the role of T'Challa not be casted with a new actor. What are your thoughts?

Shhhhhhhh....A Storm is brewing!!!

* In 1971, the character Butterfly debuted in comic books and is considered as the first Black female superhero. Butterfly made her very brief appearance in the pages of two of the Hell-Rider comic book series, which was distributed by the now-defunct Atomic Comics.
