The portrayal of Justice as a female figure dates back to the times of ancient mythology. On statues and other forms of art throughout time we see her with three key symbols: the scales of justice which are meant to represent impartiality, a sword which is symbolic of power and she is also shown to be wearing a blindfold. Why a blindfold? Per supremecourt.gov "The origin of the blindfold is unclear, but it seems to have been added to indicate the tolerance of, or ignorance to, abuse of the law by the judicial system. Today, the blindfold is generally accepted as a symbol of impartiality, but may be used to signify these other traits in political cartoons."
"A child born to a Black mother in a state like Mississippi... has exactly the same rights as a white baby born to the wealthiest person in the United States. It's not true, but I challenge anyone to say it is not a goal worth working for."
— Former United States Supreme Court Justice Hon. Thurgood Marshall
"That Justice is a blind goddess
Is a thing to which we black are wise:
Her bandage hides two festering sores
That once perhaps were eyes."
— Poet Laureate Langston Hughes
NEVER do I EVER want my name or the names of my loved ones to become hashtags amidst the chants of a nation of fed up people saying "SAY HER NAME!" and "SAY HIS NAME!" Instead if it comes down to it, may the hashtag used be #ENOUGHISENOUGH!
Constantly we hear the outcries for justice and we hold out hope that "this time will be different," and without fail justice is knocked off her pedestal and made to fall into a purgatory of human injustice. When will it end?

"Until justice is blind to color, until education is unaware of race, until opportunity is unconcerned with the color of men's skins, emancipation will be a proclamation but not a fact."

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”
