Jamaica, island of my birth, home of my adolescence is an island in the Caribbean that spans 4,244 mi² of agricultural resource rich, beautiful topography. Named Xaymaca — translated meaning: land of wood and water — by the original Taino-Arawak settlers in 600A.D. Known now as Jamaica, the island became an imperial colony in 1509 when Spain conquered the Indigenous Arawak people. In 1665 Jamaica was captured from the Spanish by the British and became a colony under the rule of the British Crown. On August 6th Jamaicans around the world will celebrate Jamaican Independence Day. The year 2022 marks 60 years of independence from British rule. [Source: Jamaican Embassy]

The Jamaican national motto is 'Out of Many One People', based on the population's multiracial roots. The motto is represented on the Coat of Arms, showing a male and female member of the Taino tribe standing on either side of a shield which bears a red cross with five golden pineapples.
